The Nigerian entertainment industry is in mourning following the passing of renowned Nollywood actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu. Mr Ibu, who had been battling a prolonged illness, breathed his last at a Lagos hospital where he had been receiving treatment.
The news of Mr Ibu's demise was confirmed by the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Rollas, who expressed deep sorrow over the loss. According to Rollas, Mr Ibu succumbed to cardiac arrest, a complication arising from his long-standing health issues.
"Today, with a heavy heart, I announce the passing of our beloved Mr Ibu. He fought bravely against his illness, but sadly, he could not overcome it," Rollas announced on his Instagram page.
Mr Ibu's health struggles had been a matter of public concern since 2023 when he first revealed that he was battling a serious illness. In a video that circulated on social media in October 2023, the actor appealed to his fans to pray for his recovery, describing his condition as "strange and dangerous."
Despite undergoing medical treatment, including a recommendation for leg amputation, Mr Ibu remained optimistic about his recovery. However, his health continued to deteriorate, leading to his eventual demise.
Mr Ibu's daughter, Jasmine Okafor, took to social media to solicit support for her father's medical expenses, indicating that the family had exhausted all options to save his life.
Born in Enugu state, Southeast Nigeria, John Okafor gained fame for his comedic roles in numerous Nollywood films. He was known for his unique facial expressions, dance moves, and witty jokes, which endeared him to audiences both in Nigeria and abroad.
The passing of Mr Ibu marks a significant loss to the Nigerian entertainment industry, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and entertainment that will be cherished for years to come.
